The Site of Fort Putnam
After The Battle of Lexington and Concord thousands of militiamen from all over New England marched to Cambridge to join the fight. General Israel Putnam marched from Connecticut to offer his services. Putnam and his militia from Connecticut stayed at the Inman House throughout the Siege of Boston.
In May 1775 General Putnam and his militia began erecting fortification to protect Cambridge, which had become the headquarters of the army, from any British attack. One of Putnam’s most notable forts was called Fort Putnam. Fort Putnam was known as the strongest fort built by the American Army. Although the fort is not still standing, the site is a significant reminder of the dedication and strength of the American Army.
