Cambridge Discovery Days

Culinary Cambridge -
Our City's Role in Shaping America's Love of Fine Food

Beginning at the Schlesinger Library at 1:00 Saturday, August 7, 2010

It’s a safe bet that Cambridge people and institutions helped determine what you are eating for dinner and what you’re eating it off of. Julia Child’s pioneering television show helped demystify cooking and introduced European and international flavors to the country while Design Research provided the dishes, utensils and tools on her set and redefined how Americans thought of their kitchens. These Cambridge institutions helped to create a more cosmopolitan American palate, while other local institutions were extending the city’s gastronomic boundaries. This tour will start at the Schlesinger Library with an introduction from an archivist working on Julia Child’s papers and then make stops at a variety of culinary hot spots in Harvard square, such as Upstairs on the Square, where we will hear from local chefs and learn about the history of different locations.

William James in Cambridge

Beginning at William James' House (95 Irving Street) at 3:00 Saturday, August 14, 2010

Although not born in Cambridge, William lived most of his life in Cambridge and spent the vast majority of his professional career at Harvard. He became known as the founder of American psychology, was the advisor to the first person to graduate Harvard with a degree in psychology, and has deeply influenced the history of thought in the cognitive sciences. This tour will explore James’ life in Cambridge, his family, and his relations with academic followers and rivals.
